Cecily Varvitsotis's Indigo Agriculture Story

HEAR FROM OUR EMPLOYEES

What would you say are Indigo's core values, and why do they resonate with you?

"Protecting the environment and improving sustainability are core values that resonate the most with me. Before joining Indigo, I was an environmental scientist specializing in petroleum remediation. It feels more fulfilling for me to work towards sustainability rather than cleaning up the waste of an unsustainable and environmentally detrimental industry. "

Cecily Varvitsotis

Do you feel you're provided the opportunity to offer up new ideas and contribute, in general, to the culture of innovation at Indigo?

"Working at Indigo you're a pioneer in the industry. Since we're doing things that few have done before, I find my colleagues are very receptive using new methods and technologies to accomplish our goals."

Cecily Varvitsotis

What's the hardest challenge you've had thus far in your job?

"Wrapping my head around the microbial and agricultural science that drives product development and data collection. It was a steep learning curve for someone with an earth science background, but I learn a lot attending the weekly R&D meetings and working with the data. "

Cecily Varvitsotis

What do you do on a day-to-day basis?

"To a degree, it depends on where we are in the growing season. I spend the majority of my time on processing data for field trials, so when harvest data comes in, I'm primarily working on conducting preliminary analyses and cleaning up the data in order to load it to the internal database. Before planting, I have more bandwidth to help other departments develop their data flow processes. I also manage our on-site seed storage, so I maintain an inventory of what seed we have available for experiments and fill seed requests for scientists. "

Cecily Varvitsotis

What are some of the interview questions you were asked?

"I remember doing a 'deep-dive' into the my educational and professional experience over the last 7 years. I was also asked why I think data quality is important, and what my preferred methods of communication were (writing, visualizations, vocalization etc.). "

Cecily Varvitsotis

How did you prepare for the interview for this role?

"Since I didn't come from an agriculture or microbial sciences background, I did my best to study up on the science behind Indigo's microbial seed treatments. I also focused on understanding Indigo's core values."

Cecily Varvitsotis

What is your background and how did you end up in your current job?

"I have an environmental science background, with a focus in hydrology and soil science. Before joining Indigo I worked as an environmental consultant for small gas-stations and fueling facilities. Soon after Indigo built a brand new building in Charlestown, a friend of mine in the agriculture industry urged me to check them out. I consider myself an environmentalist, and Indigo's sustainable farming goals and their aim to make waves in Big Ag drew me in!"

Cecily Varvitsotis

What technologies do you use at Indigo?

"Most of my time at Indigo is spent ensuring data quality and developing our internal database system. In order to make informed and data-driven decisions, it's imperative that high quality data is shareable across departments. "

Cecily Varvitsotis

Why do you think technology has such a critical role to play in farming?

"The agricultural industry relies on technological innovations in order to keep up with a quickly growing population in the face of global climate change. Advancements in technology will be crucial to the success of environmentally and economical sustainable farming practices. "
