Diana Castillo's Indigo Agriculture Story

HEAR FROM OUR EMPLOYEES

What is your background and how did you end up in your current job?

"I am an Entomologist by training that started looking at plants and microbes to see how insect populations change given these interactions. I have always been fascinated by "inter-kingdom communication" and it was almost a perfect fit to the science that is done here. I got recruited before the graduation of my PhD by one of the first scientist hired at Indigo and that's how I got here!"

Diana Castillo

Why are you excited about Indigo?

"The focus of the company. It is the first company that I feel it is trying to revolutionize the way things are done in agriculture with minimal environmental consequences. I strongly believe in the core science and thought behind the business strategy. The people that work here are excellent too and that adds another level of excitment to my experience here."

Diana Castillo

What would you say are Indigo's core values, and why do they resonate with you?

"The core value that resonates the most with me is that we will always strive to do the right thing. I think that can be applied to every single action we do as employees and as a company."

Diana Castillo

How does Indigo facilitate professional development and skill-building for all employees?

"There are a lot of opportunities to grow professionally here, either through training or exposure to a variety of projects. I think the collaboration that exists between teams in research and development opens up skill-building approaches and facilitates the participation in different scientific aporoaches. "

Diana Castillo

How does Indigo help to encourage a healthy lifestyle?

"We get re-imbursed for our gym membership, we get healthy snacks in our kitchen and lunches. Most importantly I think we are encouraged to prioritize a healthy lifestyle with the offereing of workout classes during lunch times which personally helps me a lot."

Diana Castillo

How does your company, or manager, measure whether or not you are successful in your role?

"Goal achievements during a quarter, feedback from the team and feedback from other groups."

Diana Castillo

How are you mentored in your company and are there opportunities for you to mentor others?

"I am definitely mentored through one to one weekly meetings where both my needs as a professional and team member are discussed, also where opportunities and challenges where I could learn from are identified. I also mentor others in the same way. Indirectly, I think there is a good communication amongst groups and this helps a lot for my professional growth."

Diana Castillo

What unique skills have you developed over time in your role and at this company?

"I think project management and personel management are the two things I have learned the most being here. I have acquired a lot of technical skills also but the management ones have been the most important for my professional growth."

Diana Castillo

What do you do on a day-to-day basis?

"It really depends on the day but I do like structure so I have modified my schedule a bit where some days are dedicated mostly for meetings, laboratory or computer work. I'd say on a daily basis I interact with 10 to 15 people through either of the activities I mentioned earlier. If it is a Tuesday or a Thursday I do try to go to the Indigo employees workout class and come back after lunch refreshed and ready to continue giving my best at work. "

Diana Castillo

How do you work with others in the lab at Indigo?

"I have a daily interaction with my team members maybe not necessarily in the laboratory all the time but when we all work in the lab together the interaction is informal. We talk about science fun facts, experimental designs or in general about work. I can say confidently that we have a very good work relationship with my team and that lab interaction is something that has contributed to it."
