Max Winston's Indigo Agriculture Story

HEAR FROM OUR EMPLOYEES

What's unique about Indigo's technology platform?

"The best thing about Indigo's technology platform is that we're constantly generating many different types of data relating to our product, and using that data to improve our technology. When we see patterns emerging, we design experiments or assays to test these patterns and improve our system. "

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

"There are a lot of things here. First, I like how the nature of my work is extremely varied, and involves a good balance of interpersonal and technical expertise. It is also rewarding to be building a company that has a mission that aligns with my own. But most of all, being surrounded by really intelligent people with very different backgrounds and skill sets is invigorating, that only comes with the unique mixture of science, tech, and business at Indigo."

Max Winston

How do you collaborate with other parts of the organization?

"In Data Sciences, we integrate with many different parts of the organization, since all of that data can be useful in improving our processes, which ultimately impact the quality of our research and products. More specifically, I've been involved with teaching an introductory R class, and sitting in on meetings from greenhouse and field trial data to give some advice where I can. "

Max Winston

Do you feel you're provided the opportunity to offer up new ideas and contribute, in general, to the culture of innovation at Indigo?

"Yes, absolutely. I only started a few weeks ago and I already feel there are more opportunities than time (my own) to produce them. "

Max Winston

What would you say are Indigo's core values, and why do they resonate with you?

"I would say Indigo's core values center around providing a quality product that benefits both consumer, farmer, and environment alike. Since a lot of my career has focused on trying to address the nexus of environmental and human issues, the potential of our technology to improve the welfare of both the farmer and the shared environment is particularly groundbreaking. "

Max Winston

What is the opportunity Indigo is pursuing and why are you excited about it?

"Indigo is pursuing the opportunity to improve the livelihoods of many farmers across the country whose profit is currently being squeezed by big agriculture. Simultaneously, the product we use to do this has the potential to diminish the use of certain chemical which have a number of detrimental side effects on human and environmental health. "

Max Winston

What is your background and how did you end up in your current job?

"I've had a few different positions, but I just finished my Ph.D. at University of Chicago in evolutionary genomics, with a heavy emphasis on computational biology. During my Ph.D. I moonlighted at a couple of different data-heavy start-ups in Chicago, including Civis Analytics and Tempus. Previous to my Ph.D. I worked doing research for an urban planning think tank in Chicago called the Center for Neighborhood Technology, where I focused on how to reduce energy use in affordable housing through modeling the cost-effectiveness of different measures. I guess all of these roles contributed to my training in data in a growing organization, thus now being a data scientist here at Indigo."

Max Winston

What's the hardest challenge you've had thus far in your job?

"The hardest challenge has been the segmentation on my own projects of what realistically can be completed right away, versus what will make for a longer-term project. Since data sciences often deal with a lot of different parts of the organization, it sometimes seems like there is more time for my own projects than there actually is. "

Max Winston

What do you do on a day-to-day basis?

"Many, many things. Some coding, some internal consulting, some modeling, some presenting, many meetings, and occasionally the opportunity to read scientific literature. It's a really nice mix."
